Archie Faraday I can’t describe Balzalorsky’s renditions as well as a music critic or musician can, but I can say that they took my breath away. Theiler and Haas, the pianists, also play humanely. I admit that I don’t have a frame of reference for the Debussy and Szymanowski pieces in this album. But Janáček, I search hungrily for renditions of all his pieces. Balzalorsky and Theiler do him justice. They don’t hold back in rendering the simmering passions and agonies in his pieces, and they play the delicate parts sensitively without turning falsely content and tranquil, in the manner of Kenneth Sillito’s and Paul Crossley’s 1978 rendition of the sonata. I discovered Balzalorsky through SoundCloud, and I’m very glad I did! Hope to see more releases on his Bandcamp. Favorite track: Janacek: Sonata for Violin and Piano JW 7 No. 7 - Adagio.
